She should have known. From the start, there'd been something about this store that she hadn't liked, something that had set her on edge. She skimmed over the other photos on the wall near where she stood, and sure enough, they showed various scenes from the Studebaker glory days. One showed a scene in front of some bleachers: five football players on all fours pushing against the grille of a car from the Model-T era. An older man stood by the car on the driver's side. He wore boots, knickers, and a sweatshirt. The man was staring at the football players like maybe they'd been working out too hard, and had snapped under the pressure. The men had their butts sticking up in the air like horny cats. The caption read: Knute Rockne and Notre Dame football players pose with a Studebaker “Dictator Victoria” at Notre Dame Stadium. A lithograph hung beside this photo. It showed the Studebaker factory back when it made wagons: a huge Victorian complex with railroad yards, and giant gabled buildings. The caption on this one read: The Great Studebaker Wagon Works. The Largest in the World.

She turned back and saw the chubby man in the blue suit staring openly at her. She didn't care. Let him think what he wanted. She just wanted to get out of here. She hated the fact that South Bend kept lionizing the Studebakers, like nothing had really happened in 1963, like the company hadn't just ditched the town. They should have done with Studebaker what they did at the sites of horrendous airplane crashes. The authorities, Lois had heard, would sow a ton of nails into the crash site to discourage scavengers. Still, she took some satisfaction that the lofty old Studebakers had been reduced to this, silently hawking cheap clothes from the walls of a store in a mall.
